Residential lobby on the Upper West Side was lacking a sense of hierarchy, an intuitive understanding of how people move through the space. The only sign was a roll-out rug that had become permanent. From the entrance to the elevator, one would walk by four egress stair doors.
The proposed design focused on re-organizing the space by controlling the ceiling height of each space. There is one continuous ceiling from the building entry to the elevator, with a pool of light from the raised cove in the main space. Ceiling in the small alcoves leading to the egress stairs were dropped to make them secondary. There is a marble boarder around the paving that follows the continuous ceiling.
